This Date In Baseball History

1907 - Highlander pitcher Tex Neuer, begins baseball's most successful short career by besting the Red Sox 1-0 in his first start, the nitecap of a doubleheader. In one month he will pitch six complete games, win 4, including three shutouts, and then disappear from the ML scene. [More on Neuer]

1909: In the first of two games at South Side Park, Dolly Gray of Washington enters the record book by walking eight White Sox in the 2nd inning, with seven of the walks in a row (both ML records).

1912 - The Red Sox have only 50 at bats - a major-league record for fewest at bats in a twinbill - in a doubleheader with Chicago, but they make them count. Boston wins, 5-3 and 3-0.

NYDN:

"I'm concerned that we're not hitting right now, because we're in an important time of the season," Cashman said. "We're in the stretch drive. ... We need to get going..."

The Yanks just lost a series at the Stadium to Houston in which they hit .165 and mustered only four runs. They were 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position and are batting .184 in such situations in their last 21 games entering Friday's series opener in Atlanta.

Alex Rodriguez, one of the hitters who has been carrying the Yanks, is 11-for-80 (.138) this month with two homers and 24 strikeouts. Asked about the 40-year-old Rodriguez’s woes, Cashman said, "Just a slump."

Henry Owens talking about his at-bats against Harvey last night: "I saw 11 pitches so I worked his pitch count. Well, I saw six, and heard the others.”
